Jyonan-gu Shrine Garden

Jonangu Shrine features a garden composed of four distinct areas: the Muromachi Garden, the Momoyama Garden, the Heian Garden, and the Detached Palace Garden. Together, these gardens offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy seasonal beauty throughout the year.

Among the many plantings, more than 80 species of flowers and trees described in The Tale of Genji are included, and the garden is affectionately known as the “Genji Garden of Flowers.”

The site is historically significant, as it once formed part of the former Jōnan Imperial Villa and Toba Palace established by Emperor Shirakawa. The surrounding area is an important cultural landscape where remnants of the detached palace are still buried underground.

At the time of design, the area was an open rural landscape, and the garden was conceived as a bright and tranquil space where visitors could pause and rest comfortably during their visit to the shrine.
