Nijyo Castle Seiryu-en Garden

Part of the residence and garden stones from the estate of the wealthy early Edo-period merchant Suminokura Ryōi were relocated and incorporated into the project. Additional renowned garden stones were carefully selected from historic stone-producing regions extending from Gifu Prefecture to the Kinki region.

The garden is designed in the traditional hill-and-pond style, featuring a waterfall source and stream in the northwestern corner of the site. The flowing water passes in front of the tea house before emptying into the central pond. Facing the pond, a guest hall relocated from the former Suminokura residence was constructed on the northern side, while the eastern side was developed as a spacious lawn for garden receptions and official gatherings.

The design incorporates a modern sensibility through the contrast between the curved shoreline of rounded beach stones and natural rock formations, while preserving the essence of traditional Japanese garden design. Today, the garden serves as a reception venue for state guests and distinguished visitors to Nijo Castle.
