Located within the Daitoku-ji temple complex in Murasakino, Kyoto, this Zen sub-temple features a karesansui (dry landscape) garden designed in accordance with the refined simplicity characteristic of Zen aesthetics.

The composition creates the impression of a bridge set beneath a mountain waterfall, positioned far above a valley stream. In front of the hojo (abbot’s quarters), two artificial hills and sharply upright stones are arranged to represent steep mountain ridges, with a stone bridge spanning between them to express a mountain ravine and flowing stream.

The design uses as few stones as possible, carefully arranged to achieve maximum expressive effect. On the right side of the garden, the stone arrangement is dense and flowing, while the left side is composed almost entirely of moss, creating an intentionally asymmetrical balance. This spatial contrast reflects the architectural relationship between the hojo entrance and the karamon gate, resulting in a composition that emphasizes visual harmony through asymmetry.
