This temple was founded in 1608 (Keichō 13) by Matsuko, the wife of Maeda Toshiie, with Gyokushitsu Sōhaku serving as its founding priest. It was named Hōshun-in after Matsuko’s posthumous Buddhist name. The garden was originally created in 1970 (Shōwa 45) and has since been renovated to its present form.

The garden is arranged along the southern side of the southwestern corner of the site, adjacent to the earthen wall. A low artificial hill is formed with upright stones to create a waterfall source, from which the hill extends eastward and gently tapers off near the karamon gate entrance.

In front of this area, a small island is expressed through moss and low plantings. The majority of the foreground is covered in white sand, representing a symbolic sea.

From the base of the waterfall, stone arrangements and landscape stones are placed within the white sand to express the movement of flowing water, creating a dynamic dry landscape composition.
