Jurong Town Japanese Garden Project

Commissioned at the request of the Government of Singapore as part of an overseas technical cooperation project, this Japanese garden was designed and constructed to promote cultural exchange.

The 38,400-tsubo (approximately 126,942 m²) site on an island in the Jurong River features a traditional Japanese strolling garden with hills and ponds, including two ponds of different sizes, streams, three artificial hills, waterfalls, a dry landscape (karesansui) garden, four bridges ranging from 8 to 22 meters in length, a guest house, and a restaurant.

In consideration of Singapore’s year-round tropical climate, where temperatures regularly exceed 30°C, the garden avoids the enclosed composition typically found in traditional Japanese gardens, in which delicate scenic spaces are surrounded by plantings and hills. Instead, it was designed with an open, spacious layout that creates a strong sense of openness while retaining the essence of Japanese garden design.
