Yoko-en Garden, Taizo-in Temple
One of the most distinguished ancient temples within the Myoshin-ji temple complex, founded in 1404. The garden is a 2,810-square-meter stroll-style pond garden located to the south of the Hojo (Abbot’s Quarters). It utilizes the natural slope of the higher ground to the east, while the pond is fed by a spring located on the west side of the site. The waterfall spout of the masculine waterfall is concealed by mountain-shaped shrubbery, and the mountain stream is designed to meander shallowly, widely, and gently before flowing into the pond. Although the stones used are not particularly large, their individual expressions and arrangements have been carefully crafted to create direction and varying intensity in the water flow, resulting in a magnificent landscape. The Satsuki azaleas planted on the north side are trimmed low and shallow, allowing for a wide view across the long, narrow east-west site, creating a grand and dynamic garden.
