Mimuroto-ji Temple Garden

Located on the northeastern foothills of Kohata, Uji, this temple is one of the sacred sites of the Saigoku Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimage and welcomes many worshippers throughout the year.

Responding to the head priest’s wish to create “a garden expressing the peaceful world of the Pure Land,” a karesansui (dry landscape) garden and a strolling pond garden were created using approximately 600 tons of stone.

The dry landscape garden features a stone arrangement of the Amida Triad and the Three Sacred Mountains, composed of more than 100 stones. Slender upright stones are carefully framed by surrounding plantings, creating a greater sense of depth and scale.

The strolling pond garden makes full use of the site’s natural mountainside terrain. Water overflowing from the waterfall basin divides into two streams that flow gently through the garden, complemented by carefully arranged groundcover plantings that enrich the scenery. The soothing sound of the flowing water echoes through the surrounding hills before reaching the pond, where the garden harmonizes beautifully with the borrowed mountain landscape, creating a tranquil and contemplative atmosphere.
