“A Miniature Universe of Stone and Sand: Karesansui”

First broadcast: Wednesday, July 15, 7:30 p.m.

The program explores the beauty and philosophy of karesansui (dry landscape gardens). Highlights include the ink-painting-like mountain scenery created with stones at Daisen-in Temple in Daitoku-ji; a special feature on the garden of Saiho-ji Temple, famous as Kokedera and regarded as the origin of karesansui; the hidden vision of an ideal paradise expressed in the white gravel garden of Ryogen-in Temple in Daitoku-ji; and the Zen symbolism embodied in the sand patterns of the Hojo Garden at Nanzen-ji Temple. Following the teachings of the Sakuteiki, the oldest surviving Japanese garden design manual dating from the Heian period, viewers will also see the artistic craftsmanship of a garden designer who listens to the “voice” of stones. The program offers a closer look at the world of philosophy and beauty found within the ultimate abstract landscape.
